Stupid People

So yeah, funny hand. This was a point I made the other day about weak players not making value bets, even when they have the nuts. I have 88 in the hole. UTG guy limps. Naturally I raise pre-flop from MP. I get 2 calls, one from BB and one from the limper. Ok fine. The flop hits 9JQ. This is the rare occasion that I don't make a continuation bet on the flop. That board fits far too many hands so I don't think I will get any value from my c-bet. So I check. The 2 players check behind. Long story short, the hand gets checked down to the end. Would you believe the UTG had the nut straight on the flop? He did not try to extract any money from me or the other player. A 10 hits the river so they only way he could be beat was by an AK making the nuts at the river. Why does this person play at all? What hand is he hoping to hit?

So the lesson as I mentioned the other day is, bad players sometimes don't even play their hands for value when they hit. Don't bet your weak hands because a bad opponent might just call you with the nuts. Leaving you scratching your head. Be thankful they help you save money I suppose.

Yooo....just checking on something quick. You said you checked with 2 checks behind you but your description of the hand would've meant you were in position. Did you mean you checked last on the flop and then 2 checks on the turn to you? If you were in MP and there were 2 checks to you, the UTG was probably checking after the BB to see if you'd bet since you were raising PF and he had the nuts. Same on the turn, especially if there were no flush draws. If UTG checks to you off the flop and you bet, he's hoping the BB calls your bet to maximize the pot and UTG will obviously call...then repeating the process on the turn/river. But since there were no bets by the river he's probably thinking his strategy can still play out and checks a 3rd time in hopes you will bet and the BB will call so he can re-raise. Even in this case, he should be value betting the river in hopes you will at least call since you were PF raiser and maybe the BB calls. Instead, UTG checks to you and you check and he winds up with nothing more than the PF bets/calls/blinds. His plan was good but only until the river at which point he should've been value betting. I bet if the board paired or shown a flush draw on the turn he would've started betting to protect but if not villian probably tried to play out his origianl plan.

Ok, my description of checking behind is a little off. It was UTG, me, then LP. UTG checks PF, I check, LP checks. The rest of the streets were all checks.

The guy with the straight made no bets whatsoever.

We have to figure out a way to post our logs and then load them into a hand re-player so it's clearer.
